This hat box was used by a boarder at the Belaustegui Boardinghouse. It was made by the Knox Hat Company of New York. "Registered" and "Moveo et Proficio" are printed in the middle of the brown lid above the company name and location. "Moveo et Proficio" is the company's motto, it is Latin and means "I move and I progress." There are four red eagles in the center of the lid. Two are wearing chains and are flanking a central smaller eagle inside a yellow square. The fourth eagle sits on a white and yellow perch under "Registered." The box has a winter city scene printed all the way around the outside. "Knit Hats" is printed in red script on one side. A faux leather strap and buckle passed over the middle of the box (narrow portion). The strap and buckle are attached to the sides of the box via a brass brad. The bottom of the box, underside of the lid, and inside of the box are plain.
